From its inception The Crape Myrtle Trails of McKinney Foundation has worked closely with the McKinney Independent School District. Nancy James, M.I.S.D. Assistant Superintendent of Support Services, currently serves on the CMT
Board.

Sunrise Rotarians, Crape Myrtle Trails members and Collin County Master Gardeners work at the May 2006 school distribution of crape myrtles.

Beginning in 2006 CMT has partnered with the Sunrise Rotary Club of McKinney and Collin County Master Gardeners in the distribution of hundreds of crape myrtle plants to 5th grade students at various MISD campuses. The variety Sioux was distributed in 2006 and Catawba in 2007.

Our Super Sponsors have supported the planting of crape myrtles at M.I.S.D. campuses:

2006 Super Sponsor Pogue Construction provided 200 crape myrtles in the landscape of Boyd High School at its opening in Fall 2006. It is the desire of CMT to maintain this strong relationship with MISD as new campuses are opened in upcoming years.

Finch Elementary School, McKinney, Texas
Planting of Crape Myrtles at Finch Elementary School

2006 Super Sponsors Eric and Katina Zepp funded the planting of 120 crape myrtles at Finch Elementary in March 2007. Finch is one of the historic campuses in the district and varieties chosen were in keeping with that heritage. Plans for the planting were developed by Registered Landscape Architect Rowland Jackson of Newman, Jackson, Bieberstein Inc. of Dallas.

If you are involved with one of the M.I.S.D. campuses and would like to have crape myrtles included in plantings around your building please contact the CMT offices for variety recommendations so that the plantings can be coordinated with other crape myrtles in the vicinity. You can reach us through our Executive Director Susan Owens. Phone (972) 542-1550 or e-mail: susan@crapemyrtletrails.org.

The MISD administrative annex formerly known as Greer Elementary is home to very old crape myrtle plantings from decades ago.
