Planting at McKinney High School

Let’s hear it, fellow CMT board members, for Matt and his employee. Two-handedly, they planted all 15 Twilight crape myrtles at McKinney High School this afternoon. Not many boards have members who get this down-and-dirt
THANKS, MATT!

These are the crape myrtles that we have “owed” MHS for a couple of years. We chose the same variety that we originally planted as the very first plantings anywhere of the Crape Myrtle Trails – even before Eldorado Parkway. They were planted in honor of MHS Valedictorian Danny Lowe in 1999. Unfortunately, 12 of the original 15 were mowed down and the remaining 3 were plowed under when the construction began at MHS several years ago. So we’re starting over.

That’s the way life works sometimes.
It’s my hope that soon after the New Year we will be able to get the Student Council (who paid for the plants), their sponsor Jeff, principal, Rick, Danny and his mom and dad for a photo op with the new plants.

Is it “crape myrtle” or “crepe myrtle”?

Is it “crape myrtle” or “crepe myrtle”?

There are few people & mainly  one person that I am aware of that mainly spells it the way you have spelled it. He is a PhD in Oklahoma who has done much horticultural research and has created  several very good  hybrids……. beautiful trees. Yet, The Crape Myrtle Trails of McKinney did extensive research with the U.S. National Arboretum, noted authors with growers & PhD.s from leading horticultural  universities and with its literary  history.  This is why we spell it the way we do. However, horticulturalist do not spend...

Crape Myrtle have taken a hit from this past winter’s cold.

Crape Myrtle have taken a hit from this past winter’s cold.

Garden Tip: (This one isn’t going to be fun. I’m going to ask that you trust me on this – I’ve been down this road before.) Several varieties of crape myrtles in our side-by-side comparisons in the Crape Myrtle Trails of McKinney have taken a hit from this past winter’s cold. While temperatures didn’t drop as low as they have in other years, there was sustained cold as well as cold that came earlier than usual. The result: several varieties have frozen to the ground. I have seen the same thing in other DFW area plantings, and it’s likely to...

‘McKinney honored as ‘America’s Crape Myrtle City’ By Carolyn Skei, Crape Myrtle Trails of McKinney Jan 23, 2014 The Texas State House of Representatives and the McKinney City Council both recently passed resolutions honoring the City of McKinney as “America’s Crape Myrtle City.” Representative Scott Sanford (Texas District 70) and McKinney Mayor Brian Loughmiller have presented those resolutions in recent weeks to the board of directors of the Crape Myrtle Trails of McKinney (CMT).
